Beyond the Hype:
In Fashion, it’s hard to tell what’s really real. There is so much hype around everything. So many euphemisms, so many sales gimmicks, and so much “positioning” that to get to what really is going on… that takes some hard looks. This week we have quite a few thought-provoking posts that have us question the very surface of the fashion industry. About diversity, about diversions and about those tricks they use to make us buy.

Live Life
There’s nothing like the Day of the Dead and All Hallow’s Eve that gets you thinking about, well, death… but in a festive way. The all-out do everything you want to do, be everything you want to be, no matter how fantasical or insane. Then there are the people who lived the fullest, who touched our lives, made life for a lot of people better. This week as the fashion industry mourns the passing of Oscar de la Renta, we just have to stop and think for a second. How are we going to make our lives the most well-lived we can?

Do you ever feel like when you were born, everyone got the handbook to life but you? Ok, maybe not. But when it comes to style, there is no official handbook… but that doesn’t mean we all have to wander around clueless. The Politics of Fashion
Emma Watson made waves last week when she launched the #heforshe campaign. Chanel channeled a feminist protest for their runway show this season. Chantelle Brown-Young broke through a barrier redefining beauty. No matter what you believe, the fact is we can not ignore that ideas are changing, and we’re ready.

Always Be Prepared
“You can never be over dressed, or under educated.” says Oscar Wilde. And he is right. The thing about style, is that it always depends on the occasion. Being appropriately dressed (even if it’s overdressed) is something a style seeker must always be ready for. Also, what good is style if you’re not up on substance? This week’s link roundup gets you ready for all of that so you’ll never be caught off guard. This season anyway.

That Natural Look
Maybe it had something to do with that post the Man Repeller wrote about not wearing makeup. Maybe it’s about the Normcore sensibility of not trying too hard. Maybe it’s because everyone is fed up with hyper-photoshopped images in the media. But now? Now that natural look, unretouched has never been more perfect. This week we visit fashion month, with all the trends hitting the streets and the runways, so look into the future, it’s returning to the basics.

What Really Matters
This week has been rough for a lot of us. The news is full of terrible things. Sometimes it’s hard to focus when the world seems to be descending into chaos. But, at the end of the day, we all have to show up to our regular lives. Family, friends, work, creating the best life possible. Sometimes fashion seems, well, not the highest on the list of priorities, so sometimes you just have to return to the basics, the classics to work for you while you get your life on track. It’s not all about the clothes.

To Trend or Not To Trend
Just a few years ago, fashion editors were complaining about “peacocking” and the ridiculousness of street style. It seems like the pendulum is beginning to swing the other way, because now, it’s all about the basics. Whether it’s denim, a crisp suit, or just keeping a fresh face, it’s never been so hot to not be too trendy. The non-trend-trend, or something.

Wardrobe Essentials
When it comes right down to it, what do you REALLY love to wear? Not the stuff you think you’re supposed to love, but the things you really love and actually do wear. Image is Everything?
You could say that in fashion and beauty, “Image is everything.” But is it really? Would you photoshop your images to look more model-like? If so, what’s the difference between that and say, coloring your hair? Or wearing shapewear? Where does that line exist between getting a little help and “fabricating reality.” This week we have some excellent posts, both on improving your looks with great beauty hacks and on where you can go too far when it comes to presenting your best face online.

Style Secrets Revealed
There are so many “secrets” in the style industry. It’s all smoke and mirrors, or so they say. We’re here to put an end to that. As bloggers, we like to share those secrets often whispered between friends. No, not who you kissed at the party last night! What to pack on your trip, how to get your sunglasses fitted, what are the best pairs of black tights around, and heck, even compare your wardrobe to that of a woman living in the 1930’s.

Fashion Reality
This week, it took me a long, long time to curate the links, not because of lack of quality, but because there were so many interesting topics to explore. Look Sharp Sconnie, let her facial hair grow to make a point about femininity and documented it beautifully. Vic Styles pondered if you wear the same clothes, can you be stylish? My Fashion S/ash Life found some remarkably stylish gents. And Pupuren discussed the phenomenon of photographing oneself, how one’s face changes. (I know this from experience). We may put a face on for the digital world, but there are always a few brave enough to take off the mask.

Shoe In
How do you dress for success? Do you dress for the job you want or the job you have? Are your shoes made for walking or climbing the ladder of success? Well, you know upward mobility is always on the mind of an avid blogger. This week we take the plunge into Spring and Summer trends, but not in the way of dressing down but more buttoning up. Does that mean we have work on the mind? Maybe. You’ll just have to see for yourself.

Born to be Styled
You know how it is, every season there’s something new to get into… new trends, new styles, keeping up appearances. As I get older, I notice how some things come cycle in and out, and how some things stay with us season after season. That biker jacket, that classic black and white ensemble, that perfect suit. It’s just a matter of finding that thing that resonates with you and your life year after year. We all have our fleeting musings, but what really strikes our fancy time after time? That’s what I call style.

Fashion Kaleidoscope
Style is made of so many pieces it’s hard to focus on just one element. The beauty is the collective whole of random bits and pieces from our lives makes for an abstract pattern. What? Ok, maybe that’s a bit philosophical, then again, so are a couple of the posts in this week’s roundup. From a close look at Emilio Pucci’s outrageous prints, to dissecting the underrepresentation of lesbians in the fashion world, and decoding childhood memories influence on design, there’s a lot to look at even more closely than whether or not an outfit works.

Scratch the Surface
“They” say fashion is superficial, but would those same people say the same thing if they had no clothes? Or if they had to wear ugly clothes? Chances are “they’d” be singing a different tune. Whether you call it vanity, shallowness, superficiality, the truth is we all need fashion to get through the day… so is it really so superfluous? We think not! This week we have a load of great posts that get to the essentials of style, from styling that plaid shirt literally 50 ways to becoming more confident to concealing those pesky under eye circles (because you know, you do need to look your best!)

Fab Fantasy
October, for some of you that means HALLOWEEN! Oh yes, the one holiday that used to be just for kids, now a major highlight for adults (my Halloween costumes are way more ornate/involved as an adult than as a kid!) Anywho… on the heels of Fashion Week, Halloween posts are starting to filter in. You know the ultimate mix of dreaming about fabulousness and making your most ridiculous fantasies come true for a night. What a wonderful month October is.

The Liebster Award – September 2013
I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Award by Mary Oliver from StrikeAPose! Thank you, Mary! I’ve never done one of these “random facts” blogger events/awards/chain letters, but since it’s an Award, I’ll give it my best. The Liebster Award is a way to give new bloggers with less than 200 followers (on Bloglovin’ in this case) gain more recognition, help their blogs grow and let their readers know more about them. Â
Here are my 11 questions sent to me by Mary:
1) If you were stuck on a desert island, what three things would you take with you? Lip balm, a machete, and a solar-powered mp3 player with all my tunes on it. 2) What one item could you just not live without? Sleep. And lip balm. I am a lip balm addict. 3) What is your favourite day of the year? One of the days before Halloween, while I’m planning my costume. Doing is actually a letdown. 4) Which fashion icon inspires your style the most? Robert Smith from The Cure. With extra jewelry. 5) If you had to, which TV show would you go on? Bitchin Kitchen, with Nadia G. We could make face masks. 6) What’s your most embarrassing moment? I can’t remember – my life is composed almost entirely of awkward moments. 7) What inspired your blog and the name you chose for your blog? I like the crazy side of beauty – its culture and backstories. So Wild Beauty it is. 8) Which 3 people would you invite to your dinner party? Sheryl Sandberg, Natalie Massenet, and Jeff Bezos. I’m redesigning my site, so I could use some advice… 9) What’s your favorite song to dance to in front of people? “Flashlight” by Parliament 10) What’s your favorite song to dance to when no one’s watching? I only interpretive dance in private. 11) If you could only shop in one clothes shop for the rest of your life, where would it be? Bergorf’s. I just need a little more money….send it?
Now for 11 Random Facts about me:
1. I was adopted into my family, as was my younger brother. We don’t look like each other or any of the older children. 2. I love Film Noir movies. 3. I’m a knitter, and pretty good at it, too. 4. I very much dislike the color beige in clothing. 5. I was a fire baton twirler in high school. 6. My husband and I just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. 7. I buy more books than shoes or lipsticks. 8. My first makeup job was for a fashion show at the mall in high school. 9. I still buy CDs. 10. I like cooking, but I like being cooked for more. 11. If I won the lottery, I would start a book publishing company.
My 11 nominees:
1. Ziba-Blog 2. Baluz 3. Beauty and the Travel Beat 4. Laura Louise Bell 5. Procrastinating Pretty 6. Spontaneous Chick 7. Black and Blonde 8. A Stylish Hue 9. Runway Monk 10. Lipstick and Loudmouths 11. Peaches and Smoke
Here are the questions for my 11 nominees:
- What beauty product can you not live without?
- What reality TV show could you be a character on?

- What embarrasses you?
- Rock or Rap?

- You must pick 11 nominees with under 200 followers to answer your questions (like Mary, I chose 11 bloggers with 200 or less followers on Bloglovin’)

- You must tell the nominees (in the comments on their blogs) that they have been nominated by you and state a reason
Transitions
September is always weird. The leaves start changing colors, the sweaters and coats are in the stores, we’re back to school, summer’s over… but it’s still stupidly hot! I’ve always been so excited about fall, I’d be sweating in my boots, and wearing sweaters anyway. What a girl does for fashion, right? Well, this week, we have all kinds of transitional posts. Transitioning from teenager to adult, summer to fall, day to night, and the call for fashion week to transition to the next level. We also have a hilarious post about 20th century fashion as predicted in the 19th century, it’s so spot on–not. Either way, pull up a tall iced-tea (remember, it’s hot out!) and take a look through these links.

The Wide, Wild World of Fashion
I love to think about fashion, beauty, and style outside of what we wear on a daily basis. What’s the history of a perfume or designer? How did they evolve into what they are today? How does that impact the fashion cycle around us? This week’s LALM is about the wide and wild world of fashion around us– from designers to brief nuggets of history. To iconic movements and figures (the flapper!) to reinventing and revitalizing old trends (crimping hair!). And of course– looks into icons and industry people. It’s all a wonderful reminder that there isn’t always anything new in fashion, but there are always new ways to explore it, challenge it, and investigate it.

Primping All Proper
Getting ready for summer is no easy task. We’re baring more skin, looking more “natural” and working with less layers and actual clothes to achieve that perfect style. So what do we do to make sure we’re pulled together? Primp up! Between the hair care, pedicures (and what to do if you’re to busy to get that done), getting that perfect braid and that perfect make up for your “natural look” without spending a fortune there’s a lot to do! This week’s roundup has a good mix of where to get all your beauty needs, and where to find the perfect accessories to go with that simple summer dress!

Be Yourself
With summer fast approaching, we’re all taking it easy when it comes to putting on a show. Summer is always more laid back, down to earth and relaxed… a perfect time to reflect on the madness that is everyday life. This week’s roundup did a lot of reflecting, from the poses we put on for our blogs, the hamster wheel of personal style on the web, going modest when everyone else is baring it all, letting our hair be it’s natural beautiful self, and even embracing your “eye bags.” If you’re wondering if fashion blogging is shallow or conscious or if Galliano deserves forgiveness this is the roundup for you this week! If you’re just looking for some excellent DIYs for the weekend, we’ve even got a great floral crown, handstamped jewelry, and shirt dyeing project for you!

Does it matter where you blog from? I say this as I’ve lived in four cities during my blogging career, and to tell the truth, it kind of does, but it also kind of doesn’t. This week Style Bazaar asks that question to a few bloggers about their experiences with blogging and location. We also travel around to Australia to check out their MBFW, how Man Repeller got us thinking about Japan (again), about how female politicians across the globe relate to fashion (should they?) and where you can get globally conscious accessories. As always it’s a mixed bag, so enjoy!

Spring Fever
Yesterday Spring officially sprung. While some of us are spring cleaning, some of us are coveting the trends and outfits we can wear with warmer weather. I know I’m into it after a cold winter! Anyway, we’ve got a really great mix this week. From learning what exactly “Haute Couture” means, to various explorations of all the Spring Trends for this year, some really great remixes how to take it all in with your camera phone. I’d say it’s a great way to kick off the season, and hopefully you’re as excited as I am! Now… let’s get started!
